In that post I have tried to list down all the possible methods to avoid this type of connectivity error. This is a revision post and gives you a quick remedy for error 678.
Main cause of this error: The main cause of this error is poor connectivity. You get to see this error when remote server does not respond to your request (your attempt for connectivity).
Most of the times there is no problem at server end, the problem exists with your system or modem you are using to connect. If you see this error, you can try out following remedies:
1.
Switch off / Switch on Modem (Power Switch at the back of modem) and
wait for 2 minutes and try again to connect.
2. Make sure your modem is configured properly (according to the values given by your ISP)

If
lamp is still blinking - then it is due to poor line condition /

4. Use a good antivirus program, it may happen because of Viruses.
5. Sometimes your Windows Firewall resists the connection, disable the Firewall and try to connect.
